Does it feel like you’re fighting about everything?
The dishes. The kids. Something one of you said last week. Not always big things — but ongoing. Relentless. Small things. Major battles.
“It didn’t used to be like this.”
You’ve tried to fix it. Maybe some counseling. Communication tools. Books. Googling. Podcasts. Heavy talks where you both agreed things would change.
They didn’t.
So you keep ending up back here. Another fight.
And this is the reason I wrote this book.
Here’s what twenty-plus years in practice has taught me
Most relationship advice is aimed at the wrong thing.
If you’ve tried communicating better and it hasn’t worked, it’s not because you didn’t try hard enough. It’s because the advice is working on the wrong layer. It’s trying to fix what you say to each other.
But the reason you’re fighting about everything isn’t really what you’re saying.
It’s a pattern that’s been building underneath — quietly, sometimes for years — turning ordinary conversations into flashpoints.
And here’s the part that surprises most people: that pattern wasn’t built from bad intentions. It was built from good ones. Yours and your partner’s. One of you did something that made sense from where you were standing. The other responded in a way that made sense from where they were standing. And what was meant as care — or protection, or just not making it worse — slowly hardened into something neither of you ever chose.
You’re not stuck because one of you is the problem.
You’re stuck because there’s a pattern between you that no one ever named.
Who am I and why did I write this book?
I’m Paul McNiff. A degree-qualified psychotherapist with twenty-plus years in private practice. Thousands of arguments… thousands of couples.
I call myself the No BS Therapist because I got tired of watching good people pay good money for advice that sounded reasonable but didn’t survive contact with a real Tuesday-night argument.
Early on, I noticed the tools I’d been trained to use were only working on the surface. Couples came back week after week with “a new problem” that somehow felt strangely familiar to me — because underneath, it was. The same pattern… the same problem, wearing different clothes. So I stopped working on the surface and started to focus deeper — on what was creating the issues in the first place. This book is what I found.
What this book does
In Stop the Fighting Cycle, you’ll discover:
- The pattern quietly running in most relationships — almost certainly keeping yours stuck right now
- Why your previous attempts to fix things haven’t worked and never could have (and why this was never your fault)
- The subtle, but unhelpful role yours and your partner’s good intentions have been playing
- What you can do at times when you feel a conversation starting to escalate
- How to stop the fighting cycle and change the dynamic between you — even if your partner doesn’t read a single word of this book
That last one matters a lot. So let me come back to it.
“But what if my partner won’t read it?”
It’s the question I get asked most. So let me answer it plainly.
You don’t need them to. Really!
I wrote it that way on purpose.
A challenging pattern or cycle between two people is held up by both of them. But it only takes one of you to change your part to break it — cycles like this need both of you playing your usual roles to keep it going. The moment one of you learns what’s really causing the issues… and changes your approach, the cycle has nowhere to go and changes.
This isn’t me making a promise or a guarantee that your partner will change. Sadly, I can’t do that because some people just won’t. But here’s the thing: the belief that “if my partner won’t read this, nothing can change” is, in my experience, the opposite of true. In every couple I’ve worked with… where one person genuinely shifted their part — discovered what was really keeping them stuck and did something different — something nearly always shifted in their partner too. Not because they forced them to. But because the things their partner had been reacting to — the things that had been keeping the cycle going, stopped. The negative cycle had no way to continue.
So I promise you, you have far more leverage than you might think right now. Not over your partner — over your own part of the pattern.
And to be clear: this isn’t about giving up on yourself, or lowering your standards, or letting things slide. As you’ll see, it’s actually the opposite of those. It’s about seeing what’s creating the cycle clearly enough that you can step out of that old pattern and respond in a far more powerful way — to stop that cycle for good.
What couples are saying
Jan and her husband had seen five therapists before me — the last one told them to break up. Session one, they told me I was their last hope. This is a message I received from Jan, one year later.
“You’re right. This stuff just works!”
I’m almost scared to say it out loud, but here goes: we are doing really, REALLY well. We’re probably the strongest we’ve ever been. Happy, patient, kind to each other. We feel safer and happier together than we have in a very long time. We could never have reached this point without you. You’re right. This stuff just works! — Jan
“We haven’t been this happy in years.”
Sarah and I are sitting on the back verandah with a glass of wine, talking about how much our relationship has improved. We haven’t been this happy in years — the transformation is massive. Huge respect — feel free to use us as a reference. — Matthew & Sarah
“You really DO work differently!”
When you said you worked differently, I thought you were just saying it to get people in. But wow — after seeing three others and walking away with no help, I’m blown away by how much you’ve helped us in such a short time. You really DO work differently! — Rochelle & Steve
What this will (and won’t) change
I want to be honest about what reading this might actually change. Not the marketing version — the real one.
The people I’ve worked with who use this don’t think of it as a dramatic or over-hyped turnaround. It’s more of a steady recalibration of their relationship, and a re-bridging of their connection.
Your partner won’t suddenly change overnight. And the arguments won’t just vanish instantly. But as you work with the tools I outline, the arguments will happen less often. And more importantly, they won’t cut as deep or feel nearly as hurtful. And your recovery as a couple will get faster and easier. Plus, the space between your arguments will get longer — and lighter.
You’ll start to catch the pattern that’s been driving issues, before it gets going. You’ll begin to see your partner’s reactions differently — not as them being difficult, but as them doing the things they’ve always done… inside the old pattern. And because you can see it, it will be easy for you to stop reacting the way you used to. Relief.
Your relationship will feel less like effort and more like the warm and connected space you want it to be.
The truth is that this book is much simpler than this genre usually demonstrates. It’s both more real and more sustainable because it comes from a shift in the underlying patterns that are creating the issues — not from forcing yourself to white-knuckle a communication technique that you’ll grapple with, but give up on by next Thursday.
So the question is: are you ready to discover the real reasons why your relationship has been stuck? And even more importantly, are you ready to find out exactly what you can do to truly stop the fighting cycle?
